Sheital Shetty, Editor & Publisher – Washrooms and Beyond highlights the positives for the washroom industry in an otherwise gloomy scenario

Covid has brought almost all industries to their knees. The building materials and design field have also felt its cataclysmic tremors. Just when there was a glimmer of hope, the resurgence of cases has made the atmosphere pensive. However, we do not contribute nor agree to the prophecies of doom.

The very visible spurt in construction (and repair and rebuild) activity has not stemmed. The reason is a perceptible shift in how we all operate in our professional calling. There is a clear understanding among professional builders, designers, and even clients about safety precautions and maintaining them during work.

It will be short-sighted to start wringing hands just because the general prime time news is getting hyper about an impending return of the challenges. Challenges will remain for a considerable time. Let there be no doubt on that count. However, if the lessons of last year are anything to go by, there must be a studied and conscious thrust to restart and energise the construction and design activities following all protocols.

“Thankfully, the push towards stepping up on infrastructure development is not lagging. Though coupled with stumbling blocks in slow moving government files, builders face an uphill task in going ahead with new projects to meet a formidable demand of housing and real estate development.”

The infrastructure associated with the ‘external’ dimensions of the washroom business, especially for the higher echelons of the industry, might still not appear as an issue of immediate or direct concern. In the face of Covid, there is a tendency to downplay every other wall that confronts business world. Thankfully, the push towards stepping up on infrastructure development is not lagging. Though coupled with stumbling blocks in slow moving government files, builders face an uphill task in going ahead with new projects to meet a formidable demand of housing and real estate development.

The answer will be out in a few months. There is a positivity of an expected rise in consumer confidence post June. This augurs well for the washroom industry which was on tenterhooks for quite some time last year.

While online was the go-to fall back last year, we have stuck to our strength and even celebrated our anniversary issue earlier. Wb. is rising to the challenge. We are confident the industry will also be in step.
