Liberating Spaces

The design of a compact luxury bathroom involves a harmonious blend of various design elements including lighting, colours, materials and fixtures to create a sense of space and enhance the spatial experience for the users, writes Mrinmoy Dey

Shortage of living spaces in urban areas and skyrocketing property prices have led to shrinking floor plans in residential buildings in densely populated metros in India, leading to an increasing number of small bathrooms. However, consumer expectations and requirements from the bathroom as a space have only increased, creating a conundrum for designers.

In the past, only large, luxurious bathrooms were considered well-equipped and tailored to a certain lifestyle. However, in today’s urban areas, there is a growing demand for lifestyle-compatible small bathrooms – a demand driven not only by design-savvy individuals and couples but also by families. In many cases, it’s not a matter of budget available but overcoming the limitation of space.

Can a Small Bathroom be Luxurious?

Kiran Gala, Founder and Principal Designer, Kiran Gala & Associates asserts that luxury isn’t completely determined by the size of the space but by the quality of materials, functionality and design. “A compact bathroom can absolutely be luxurious through design elements, good quality fixtures and efficient use of space. Clever storage solutions, elegant and rich finishes with good details make it a luxury in itself.”

Vivek Gupta, Principal Architect, Arvind Vivek & Associates agrees, “Whilst luxury of space is certainly derived from the size of the bathroom, the luxurious look can definitely come from the material used, the fixtures as well as lighting, which in smaller bathrooms, play a very critical role. An ergonomically well-designed compact bathroom can be luxurious for sure.”

However, designing a luxury bathroom in a compact space is more complicated and challenging. “In today’s world, when we are fighting for every inch, creating a modern bathroom in a small given space is a big achievement. A small bathroom which is well-designed, articulated and functional with all major gadgets and accessories tucked in properly is definitely a cute luxury washroom,” opines Soumitra Majumder, Partner, Utopian Associates.

Talking about the approach of designing a compact luxury washroom, Archana Baid, Principal Interior Architect, And Design Co shares, “Elevating the sense of luxury in such spaces involves the utilisation of high-quality materials, tasteful fixtures, optimal lighting, and innovative storage solutions. The integration of elements such as a rainfall showerhead, a chic vanity, indulgent towels, and scented candles further contributes to elevating the overall ambience of the bathroom.”

Luxury means different things to different people. For some, it could be glitz or pure indulgence, for others, it can be quiet, simplicity, and sophistication. “The availability of local and imported materials, fittings and fixtures in the Indian market has raised the bar of the acceptable standard of a bathroom. While the glitz and glamour are available through all budgets, what stands apart is the attention to detail and the workmanship which is the hallmark of luxury. And, it is very much possible to achieve this for a compact bathroom,” avers Sonal Merchant, Partner, Sonal Merchant Architects.

“Our approach to instilling a luxurious ambience involved the selection of a lighter colour palette for both the walls and flooring in bathrooms, that created an expansive and open atmosphere.”

Creating a Sense of Space

The biggest challenge in creating a luxurious feel in a small bathroom is the lack of space. Hence, elevating the perceived dimensions of the given space is a paramount design objective in a compact luxury bathroom. “Use of glass, light coloured floor and wall cladding materials and mirrors often help in making a space look bigger and expanded,” states Majumder.

Explaining how And Design created a feeling of space in one of its compact bathrooms, Baid shares, “Our approach to instilling a luxurious ambience involved the selection of a lighter colour palette for both the walls and flooring in bathrooms, that created an expansive and open atmosphere.”

She further adds, “To enhance the perception of increased spatial expanse, we deliberately opted for frameless mirrors, strategically positioning them to maximise light reflection. The curation of depth and visual intrigue was accomplished through the sophisticated layering of diverse textures and materials. This intentional layering not only imparted a dynamic quality but also significantly contributed to an elevated perception of spaciousness within the designated areas.”

Gupta asserts that a compact bathroom need not look cramped. “To achieve a sense of space, we do not put marble/ tiles on walls up to the ceiling height, in the entire bathroom. We rather restrict it to the wet areas, like a shower cubicle. In other areas, around the WC and wash basin, marble/ tiles on the dado are put only up to 4 feet high, leaving the walls free to be adorned with art, mirror or wallpaper to enhance the look and also make the bathroom feel like a room. The other technique we use is to have large windows allowing natural light to flow in and the space looks large.”

Theme, Colour Palette and Overall Ambience

Compact luxurious bathrooms can be divided into two broad categories – the powder bathrooms and the main bathrooms. The design approach and the selection of theme thus vary depending upon the type of bathroom.
“For powder bathrooms, the theme is generally more flamboyant – showcasing the vanity, generally with a countertop vessel, more often than not a coloured one with a nice large front-lit mirror. The dado tiles/ marble, I prefer up to 4 feet height and framed art with a picture light or a wall grazer,” shares Gupta.

He further adds that the main bathroom of course is more practical with coordinated floor and walls, an under-counter wash basin, for practical ease, a large counter with adequate space to keep the requisites, comfortable shower space with niches to keep the bath soaps, shampoos etc. “One must ensure the wet areas are cordoned off with a shower cubicle. Shower curtains are a no-no for me! A lavish bathroom does have a bathtub or Jacuzzi thrown in, placed in a manner that enhances the look and feel, without making it cramped. In India, a WC alongside a bidet would be great to have.”

It’s important to choose a colour palette and theme in such a way that it makes the space feel open, inviting and appealing. “For me, a lighter colour scheme with a hint of one attractive material makes it a completely well-thought design,” opines Gala.

However, the selection of colour palettes varies from project to project and even darker colours can also work if it’s cohesive with the material selection and overall design. Giving examples of two compact bathrooms, Baid informs, “A deliberate and refined approach was taken by our team in selecting a cohesive colour palette. Rich, dark tones were employed in one, while the other exuded regal opulence through warm beige hues. To heighten the overall impact of luxury, we artfully incorporated metallic accents and touches of sumptuous jewel tones with a pinch of eclecticism that came in with the pineapple bouquet.”

The interior of the other bathroom exudes timeless elegance. “Conceptualised and designed with attention, it embraces an old-world charm, featuring a Baroque sink console adorned with an ornamental statement mirror. To further enrich the space, we choose an ornate wall covering seamlessly integrated into the overarching theme and colour scheme, resulting in a brilliantly sophisticated and majestic ambience,” adds Baid.

Selection of Materials and Fixtures

When it comes to choosing the right material, it’s really important to understand hues and textures that provide depth and create a refined and serene ambience. “Selection of sleeker gadgets and more concealed products will help in keeping more open space. Use of onyx, may add a depth to the space because of translucency of the material,” claims Majumder.

According to Gala, the materials should be chosen keeping in mind the size of marble/ tile/ granite as the larger the piece the larger it makes the space look. “Also, mirrors can play a good role in giving you a proper infinite look to a compact space. Fixtures can be selected in polished finishes in order to add a touch of modern sophistication.”

“Consider including smaller potted plants or hanging planters that can be placed strategically to introduce a touch of greenery. Alternatively, use nature-inspired patterns or textures in tiles, wallpaper, or accessories to evoke a sense of nature within the space.”

Explaining the nuances of selecting materials for a compact luxury washroom, Gupta adds, “For the materiality, marble floors do add shine and expanse and the walls for wet areas would go right up to the ceiling level, the rest clad up to 4 feet height. A large window with frosted/ fluted glass to allow diffused light while enhancing privacy is ‘de rigueur’. A clean line wall hanging WC with a concealed cistern and a nice overhead shower with thermostat control completes the look. Landscape and plants, both inside the bathroom and outdoors, are great as well.”

In a couple of compact bathrooms, Baid has used textured and patterned marbles, featuring a harmonious blend of matte and glossy finishes. This choice introduced captivating contrasts, carefully maintaining minimal tonal variation for a sophisticated aesthetic.

“To further elevate the space with a touch of pronounced panache, we created strategic focal points. An oyster white free-standing bathtub took centre stage in one interior, while a pedestal marble sink claimed prominence in another, each designed to serve as key statements within the overall design. For fixtures, we always choose high-quality products either in brass finish or gold that have an air of elegance but are at the same time functional, maximising the balance of style and functionality,” enlightens Baid.

Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role when one wants to give a grander experience to a space in contrast to its dimensions. The careful selection of light fixtures, their strategic placement, and appropriate intensity collectively contribute to enhancing both the ambience and functionality of any given area.

“In the context of compact bathrooms, we firmly believe that layered lighting is indispensable for creating a well-lit and welcoming environment. A thoughtful combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to illuminate distinct zones establishes a sense of depth,” opines Baid.

She further adds that to imbue an added touch of luxury, pendant lights and LED strips can judiciously be employed to accentuate key features of the interiors. Introducing backlit mirrors is another element that significantly elevates the ambience of compact luxury bathrooms, concurrently enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal in bathroom interiors. “Additionally, the installation of dimmer switches proves to be a transformative feature, allowing for adjustable lighting levels tailored to varying moods and activities. The ability to dim the lights further facilitates the creation of a spa-like atmosphere conducive to relaxation and unwinding.”

One should emphasise natural light as much as possible by using translucent or frosted glass in windows or partitions to allow light to enter while maintaining privacy. If natural light is limited, one should incorporate artificial lighting strategically to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

“Use task lighting around the vanity area and consider installing dimmable lights for creating different moods and relaxation. Use lighting techniques to simulate a connection with nature. Incorporate warm, natural-coloured LED lighting or fixtures that mimic natural daylight to create a soothing and inviting ambience. Implement lighting options that allow for customisation, such as colour-changing features or adjustable intensity, to adapt to different wellness activities,” suggests Shami Goregaoker, Design Director, GA Design.

Connecting with Nature

Diversifying the integration of natural elements in bathroom interiors extends to the inclusion of plants, flowers, or the creation of a modest indoor garden. “We can incorporate biophilic design in order to evoke a connection with nature. We can use organic shapes, textures and patterns also,” shares Gala.

“While space limitations may restrict the inclusion of large plants, consider smaller potted plants or hanging planters that can be placed strategically to introduce a touch of greenery. Alternatively, use nature-inspired patterns or textures in tiles, wallpaper, or accessories to evoke a sense of nature within the space,” adds Goregaoker.

Baid emphasises that the introduction of expansive windows overlooking an enclosed garden or the installation of a skylight offers an unparalleled opportunity to invite the outdoors into the interior space, enhancing the overall connection with nature.

“A large window with frosted/ fluted glass to allow diffused light while enhancing privacy is ‘de rigueur’. Landscape and plants, both inside the bathroom and outdoors, are great as well.”

“To create an immersive experience within the bathroom, in one of our projects, we designed a nature-inspired mosaic wall. This discerning detail seamlessly infused a refreshing and calming ambience into the space. Such considerations contribute to a holistic and rejuvenating bathroom environment that transcends conventional design boundaries. Further, in our material selection, we consistently prioritise the use of wood, stone, or bamboo, recognising their inherent ability to instil a welcoming warmth,” divulges Baid.

Ultimately, the essence of luxury lies in the comprehensive spatial experience and the adept curation of the space, transcending mere dimensions to emphasise a thoughtful design. And, while designing compact yet luxurious bathrooms is a considerable challenge, demanding meticulous consideration for layout, colour scheme, and overall aesthetics, among others, it certainly is a rewarding experience!

Project: Contemporary Tropical

Contemporary Tropical compact luxury bathroom by And design Co

The design challenges encountered in this specific project stemmed from the spatial constraints of a bathroom within a villa. At And, we love such opportunities where there is a scope to transcend conventional norms and conceive ideas that elevate spaces beyond their physical limitations.

While planning, a deliberate decision was made to eliminate doors between the dresser and the washroom, fostering an open and airy ambience. To enhance the sense of spaciousness and introduce abundant natural light, a substantial source of natural ventilation was strategically incorporated within the shower area.
The overarching theme chosen for this endeavour was contemporary tropical, manifested through the utilisation of light-toned Carrara marble. Further augmenting this theme, a captivating wall adorned with micro mosaics depicting a serene forest scene was designed.

To amplify the perceived depth of the space, an expansive end-to-end mirror was curated as a focal element within the bathroom interior. This comprehensive approach resulted in a harmonious blend of innovative design concepts and aesthetic considerations, transforming a compact villa bathroom into a distinctively luxurious and experiential sanctuary.

Project: Creating an Illusion of Space

Lead Architect/Designer: Kiran Gala, Founder and Principal Designer, Kiran Gala & Associates

Compact bathroom by Kiran Gala

This compact bathroom, recently designed by Kiran Gala & Associates, features a lighter colour palette with black fixtures, a big mirror and a combination of blue tiles in a specific area. Despite its compact size, the bathroom offers ample storage through cleverly integrated cabinets and shelves without compromising on style. Also, wall-mounted toilets and sinks free up floor space, making the bathroom feel more spacious than its actual size.

Project: Accentuating with Art

Lead Architect/Designer: Sonal Merchant, Partner, Sonal Merchant Architects

Accentuating a compact bathroom with artistic elements

The approach to this bathroom is from a corridor that is lined with miniature and Tanjore-style paintings. The concept was immersive art. In this bathroom, the compact size along with the absence of natural light and ventilation were the challenges.

Two walls are bespoke print glass which is backed with a mirror to reflect the ambient light. A mirrored wall is introduced to double this volume. An Italian marble floor and shower area provide a neutral background for the myriad colours of the printed glass. There is accent lighting in the dry area which also contrasts with the brightly lit shower space.
