Creating A Playful Vibe

The USP of this washroom, designed by Kham Consultants, is the marshmallow-inspired colour scheme and herringbone patterned tiles, which add an interactive, cheerful atmosphere suited to young children. “Their matte finish and bold use of pattern create an artistic statement that can be appreciated at all ages. The soft wooden textures further ground the design, creating a harmonious balance that feels both inviting and playful,” shares Monica Khosla Bhargava, Principal Architect, Kham Consultants.

The Design Approach

Talking about the design brief Bhargava recalls, “The client’s brief was to design a lively, playful washroom for three cousins in a joint family (girls aged 3-6 years old) that would feel both whimsical and functional. Our approach centred around creating a space that balanced vibrant colours with practicality, ensuring it would grow with the children while maintaining a playful vibe.”

She further adds, “To achieve this, we used a herringbone patterned tile arrangement in soft, pastel shades like blush pink, teal, and sandy beige to add warmth and visual interest. The round mirrors with colour-framed borders were selected to echo a playful theme and provide individual spaces for each child.”

The main challenge, according to the architect, was designing a space that was safe and functional for children, as well as easy to maintain. “Ensuring the washroom fixtures and fittings were child-accessible without compromising on aesthetic quality was crucial. We selected rounded edges and minimised any sharp or protruding elements. Another challenge was creating a space that would grow with the children, so the colour palette and materials chosen were timeless and adaptable,” explained Bhargava.

The Layout and Design

The layout includes a walk-in, and functional vanity area with sufficient storage to keep essentials within easy reach. The colour scheme, dominated by pastel shades in a herringbone tile pattern, brings warmth and vibrancy to the room, without overwhelming the space.

The vanity area is enhanced with three differently coloured circular mirrors, each providing a whimsical touch that children will enjoy. The use of light wood tones on the cabinetry and floor gives a natural, calming feel that balances the colourful tiles.

The overall design combines aesthetics with child-friendly functionality, ensuring this washroom is both beautiful and practical for young children. This washroom demonstrates how a playful approach with thoughtful design choices can create a space that is both engaging for children and appealing to adults.
