The Rise of Shower Toilet

Though cost remains a barrier to widespread adoption, there is significant traction for technologically advanced shower toilets in the high-end segment owing to improved personal hygiene and conveniences they offer, writes Mrinmoy Dey

The evolution of bathroom design has seen numerous innovations aimed at enhancing hygiene, comfort, and efficiency. One of the most significant advancements in recent years is the integration of the shower toilet, a revolutionary fixture that combines the functionalities of a traditional toilet and a bidet.

This innovative fixture not only elevates personal hygiene but also introduces a host of additional benefits. As interior designers and architects strive to create spaces that prioritise both aesthetics and functionality, the shower toilet stands out as must-have feature in modern bathrooms.

What’s Driving the Demand?

Recently, shower toilets have gained popularity due to hygiene concerns, as toilet paper is often considered ineffective and environmentally harmful. Producing one roll of toilet paper requires 37 gallons of water, and 15 million trees are cut down annually for this purpose.

The use of health faucets is increasing, though there are still gaps in design sophistication and comfort. Shower toilets, which combine the functions of a toilet and a bidet, appear to be a superior solution and offer a multitude of benefits that make them a compelling choice for modern bathrooms.

These toilets are space-efficient and convenient, featuring an integrated shower function that releases warm water at the touch of a button, ensuring thorough and gentle cleaning. This method enhances personal hygiene and reduces the risk of skin-related issues caused by inadequate cleaning with toilet paper.

Furthermore, shower toilets are designed with user comfort in mind. Features such as heated seats, adjustable water temperature, and customisable spray intensity add a touch of luxury and make the bathroom experience significantly more pleasant. Some models also come equipped with air drying functions, eliminating the need for toilet paper entirely, which is both convenient and eco-friendly.

Additionally, many shower toilets come with advanced technological features like automatic lids, deodorizing systems, and even health monitoring capabilities, which can track and analyse bathroom habits for potential health issues. These smart features not only enhance user convenience but also promote a healthier lifestyle. Plus, aesthetically, the sleek, modern appearances of shower toilets fit well with contemporary décor style.

Lastly, the health benefits of using shower toilets cannot be overstated. For individuals with sensitive skin, haemorrhoids, or other conditions that make traditional wiping uncomfortable, the gentle water spray provides much-needed relief.

High-tech Shower Toilets

Last year, Hansgrohe introduced Lavapura, a sustainable and anti-bacterial shower toilet. Inspired by free-standing bathtubs, Lavapura’s seamless design enhances cleanliness and user-friendliness. Equipped with sensors, it automatically opens and closes the lid, and its advanced water technology and anti-bacterial wand ensure a hygienic cleansing experience.

Lavapura features an antibacterial seat made from silver ion material, wireless charging for the remote control, and gravity flushing technology for effective use with low water pressure or during power outages. UV Wand Sterilization technology activates UV sterilization when the wand is not in use.

According to Hansgrohe, “The shower toilet includes an automatic deodorizer with an air-purifying filter system, adjustable seat heating, and water temperature settings. Features like cold and hot alternate cleansing and Easyclean glaze make Lavapura a reliable, water-efficient, and attractive option for any bathroom, including guest bathrooms.”

Villeroy & Boch has developed a patented dirt-repellent material technology for its Viclean toilet seat and shower nozzle. This is a permanent protective film with anti-bacterial properties. The nozzle is also cleaned automatically with water before and after use. Furthermore, it has a manual cleaning function where the shower nozzle slides out without water. All it needs is a neutral cleaning agent and a soft cloth or sponge. It consumes at the most between 270 and 430 ml/min of water per cleaning cycle. They have incorporated their patented Balloon Jet technology in which the water is enriched with air.

A couple of years back, American Standard introduced the Spalet Collection, featuring elegantly designed shower toilets like the Aerozen and Acacia E, and electronic bidet seats with spa-like functions for enhanced personal hygiene and comfort. “Key features include dual nozzle for front and rear cleansing, posterior cleansing with a powerful spray, feminine air bubble soft cleansing, a deodoriser, anti-bacterial protection, and a nozzle shutter. The auto drain system replaces unused water every 72 hours,” informed the company.

For convenience, it offers an instant heating system for constant warm water, an adjustable heated seat, a massage spray, and an adjustable dryer temperature. “The Quick-detach seat cover allows easy cleaning, while the auto seat and cover sensor opens and closes the lid and flushes automatically. Energy-saving features include the one-touch power saver and a circuit breaker for power conservation.”

For Smaller Washrooms

A few years back, Vitra introduced the V-Care Prime shower toilet, designed by Arik Levy. The range is particularly useful for smaller washrooms or cloakroom bathrooms. “What sets the V-Care Prime apart from other shower WCs is the option for a hands-free control through the remote control and the app, which allow users to tailor their bathroom experience to their individual needs and it keeps users’ personalised settings for V-Care in the app,” claimed the company.

The additional adjustable features include the temperature, pressure and direction of the water flow and there are also several different personal drying modes. The heated seat has been ergonomically designed to offer additional comfort. It offers temperature control and an automatic open and close function to reduce contact. “V-Care Prime also includes a child mode that can be activated by parents through the V-Care app to adjust the water flow and pressure. The integrated bidet nozzle is also specially designed for female hygiene.” The toilet won the Good Design Award in 2021.

Minimalist Shower Toilet

Designed by Philippe Starck, the Sensowash Starck shower toilet from Duravit combines minimalist aesthetics with advanced functionality. It can be operated via a remote control or configured through an app, integrating all technology within the ceramic body for a sleek look. The flat, heated toilet seat, just 40 mm high, and its white cover form a seamless unit, made from durable, hygienic materials with a scratch-resistant, pore-free surface.

“Comfort is enhanced by features such as a motion sensor for automatic cover opening and user ID in the seat, along with adjustable settings for seat heating, shower flow, and a controllable hot air dryer. The rimless design ensures efficient water flow, thoroughly rinsing the entire inner surface even with small amounts of water – making it easy to clean. Hygieneglaze 2.0 technology guarantees a high standard of hygiene by killing 99.999% of bacteria quickly,” informed the company.

The Sensowash Starck offers tailored cleansing experiences with its rearwash for general use and ladywash for gentle female cleaning. A special night light provides orientation and safety without disrupting sleep. The Sensowash app enables individual configuration of the shower toilet and can control the flush function and odour extraction system, especially when paired with the A2 electronic actuator plate.

Electronic Commode Seats

A few years back, Panasonic Life Solutions India introduced the Electric Toilet Seat (ETS) designed with the latest antibacterial seat technology. It consists of a unique 3D curve seat along with an electric bidet that adjusts according to each body type suitable for all. The product is built with smart features making it hassle-free and offers a hands-free experience that suppresses bacterial growth on the antibacterial seat and nozzle.

The ETS comprises a built-in water filter to keep the impurities at bay. The two washing modes in the product allows the user to control/adjust the water temperature between 34-40 degrees as per their liking. It also has a built-in safety feature of electrical leakage indicator, occupancy switch and backflow prevention.

Considering how crucial the toilet and its variables are in maintaining personal hygiene, constant technology advancements and improvements by service providers are on to ensure a comfortable and clean experience. The innovative designs, coupled with ease of use go a long way in ensuring the toilet experience is effective in ensuring a clean, comfortable and hygienic wash. While India is now at par with its global counterparts in offering a world-class toilet design, certain changes are inevitable considering the cultural and personal use habits that are followed in India.
