Contemporary Commercial Washroom
The USP of this washroom, designed for a corporate office in Gurugram, lies in its bold, cohesive colour theme, featuring vibrant blue mosaic tiles, sleek cylindrical pedestal sinks, and warm wood accents balanced by neutral flooring. It creates a memorable and energising user experience. Further, thoughtful lighting enhances its modern, sophisticated design, making it both functional and visually striking.
The Design Brief and Execution
The client requested a modern, visually engaging, and functional washroom space that exudes a sense of vibrancy while maintaining a high level of practicality. The objective was to create an inviting atmosphere with a bold colour palette that stimulates energy, which is particularly suitable for high-traffic or public restroom areas,” recollects Vistasp Bhagwagar, Principal Architect, AVA Design Pvt. Ltd.
To fulfil the client’s vision, the architect adopted a bold, fresh design scheme dominated by bright blue mosaic tiles, which bring vibrancy and energy into the space. The ceiling was painted a matching blue, enhancing the overall cohesiveness of the colour palette and adding an element of depth.
“We balanced the vivid colour of the tiles with neutral and warm elements, such as light grey floor tiles and wood-accented stall doors, to create visual harmony and avoid an overwhelming effect,” shares Bhagwagar.
He further illustrated, “The sleek, cylindrical pedestal sinks were chosen to emphasize the modern theme and to provide a striking contrast to the intricate mosaic backdrop. Lighting fixtures, such as the pendant lights, were strategically placed to create a warm and inviting ambience while enhancing the reflective quality of the mirrors and tiles.”
Overcoming the Challenges
Designing a layout that could handle high traffic efficiently while maintaining an open, uncluttered feel required thoughtful placement of elements, such as mirrors, sinks, and partitions, to optimise flow and usability.
One of the biggest challenges in this washroom design was incorporating such a bold, dominant colour (blue) without making the space feel overwhelming or visually cluttered. “To address this, we carefully selected neutral and warm accents to soften the overall look and maintain balance,” explains Bhagwagar.
Creating a cohesive design by ensuring that the ceiling’s painted blue shade matched the wall tiles perfectly was also a challenge, as different surfaces can reflect light differently. “We conducted multiple colour tests to achieve a seamless integration,” the architect shares.
Overall, this washroom strikes a balance between bold aesthetics and functionality, making it a standout design for a contemporary public or commercial space.
