Contemporary, Luxurious and Artistic

The USP of this bathroom, designed by Spaces and Design, lies in its bold yet balanced use of geometric patterns and contrasting materials, blending artistry with functionality. “The Earls Court bathroom is an ode to contemporary design, seamlessly combining bold patterns with warm, organic textures,” asserts Pooja Bihani, Founder and Principal Architect, Spaces and Design.

The Brief and Challenges

Talking about the brief, Bihani shares, “The client’s brief for the Earls Court bathroom was to create a contemporary, artistic retreat with a focus on bold contrasts and clean, geometric forms. The bathroom needed to exude elegance, feature strong monochromatic patterns, and maintain a sense of openness. Functionality and comfort were paramount, but the client also wanted the space to feel like a gallery—featuring striking design elements that invite admiration.”

To achieve this, the designer used a dramatic black-and-white striped marble pattern for both the walls and floors, creating a dynamic visual rhythm throughout the space. “A freestanding white bathtub became the focal point, positioned in front of a circular inset feature wall that draws attention with its interplay of textures and symmetry. Warm wooden tones were incorporated in the cabinetry and accent elements to soften the monochrome intensity and add warmth to the design.”

She further adds, “The challenges revolved around aligning the patterns precisely in a way that maintained balance and harmony while preventing the space from feeling overwhelming. Additionally, integrating natural light with the bold patterning required careful placement of mirrors and fixtures to reflect light evenly while enhancing the visual drama of the stripes.”

Design Approach

The Earls Court bathroom is an ode to contemporary design, seamlessly combining bold patterns with warm, organic textures. The concept revolves around the interplay of contrast and geometry, creating a space that feels both luxurious and artistic. A monochromatic black-and-white striped marble design flows from the floors to the walls, giving the bathroom a cohesive, high-contrast visual aesthetic that feels modern yet timeless.

At the heart of the bathroom lies a freestanding white bathtub, positioned against a striking circular feature wall. This wall juxtaposes linear patterns with soft, curved forms, establishing a sense of balance and harmony. Flanking the tub are sleek, minimalistic fixtures and black cabinetry that echo the sharp lines of the design. The addition of warm wooden elements in the cabinetry and doors softens the starkness of the space, grounding it with an earthy warmth.

Lighting plays a crucial role, with strategically placed pendant lights and expansive mirrors reflecting natural light to create a bright, airy atmosphere. “Despite the bold design choices, the bathroom remains functional and comfortable, thanks to the thoughtful layout and careful selection of materials,” states Bihani.

She further asserts that the Earls Court bathroom is not merely a utility space—it is an immersive, design-driven experience that blends boldness with refinement, making it a standout feature of the home.
