The Black and White Piano

This washroom, designed by Mumbai-based architectural firm We Architects, sports a striking Black and White Piano theme, perfectly complementing the lively terrace setting. To move away from standard materials like beige Italian marble and typical fixtures, the design makes innovative use of cost-effective vitrified tiles in black and white tones, creating a stunning visual contrast. The tinted mirror with black and white stripes reinforces the bold theme while adding a playful element to the space.

“The client’s directive was clear: create a washroom that stands apart from conventional designs and aligns with the adjacent fun and recreation zone – a terrace bar and jacuzzi area. Full creative freedom was granted, with an emphasis on delivering a space that embodies uniqueness, fun, and sophistication. The challenge was to break away from traditional design norms and achieve a bold, distinct aesthetic while ensuring functionality and balance,” recalls Samir Dharurkar, Principal Architect, We Architects.

The Design Concept

The elongated layout of the washroom, measuring 1500 mm x 4400 mm, accommodates both functional and aesthetic needs. In addition to the primary bathing area, it includes provisions for a washing machine and dryer counter.

The use of stone finish black and white tiles in combination with black granite – makes a balanced contrast of soft and hard surfaces. A little bit of metal shade adds up to the necessary warmness. Specially coated fixtures with nano-coating clear glass enhance the luxury experience.

Achieving aesthetic balance just by using two colours was a bit challenging. “Careful planning went into achieving harmony, from the selection of materials to the precise execution of joinery details. We also used special chemicals to achieve the expected joinery details and finishing. However, credit goes to good workmanship too,” shares Dharurkar.

He further adds, “Earlier, we thought that using black would make the narrow space dull. After working on so many options, we freeze on this option. A perfect selection of sanitary fixtures, lights, shower drains and exhaust fan depicts a strong impact of colours.”

Explaining the choice of materials, Dharurkar remarks, “We earlier thought of using a combination of black Portoro and Statuario marble. But we experimented with tiles and believe me – that’s the most appreciated washroom in that bungalow from a design perspective.”

Maximising natural light is a key highlight of this design. The washroom maintains its bold visual impact even in natural light, minimising reliance on artificial lighting. Only two ceiling lights and a mirror light are used, ensuring an energy-efficient setup that maintains the intended aesthetic.

“The overall design effort focused on incorporating unique and innovative furnishings in the washroom, ensuring convenience and accessibility for all age groups while creating a space for relaxation and enjoyment. The result is quite motivating for us to continue exploring and experimenting with bold new ideas in future designs,” states Dharurkar.
