The washrooms which are part of a show flat in Mumbai, designed by Nahar Projects, follow a modern contemporary design and attempts to provide the user a luxurious experience, explores Mrinmoy Dey

Designed to be part of a show flat at ‘Excalibur by Nahar’ project, located at Mahalaxmi (E) in Mumbai, the washroom provides an aspirational vibe. “It’s hard to see how someone couldn’t feel a huge confidence boost having stepped inside this washroom. Having a luxury bathroom is saying to yourself ‘I deserve to have these moments be extra special’,” says, Ajay Nahar, CMD, Nahar Projects.

Excalibur by Nahar is a project which showcases how it juxtaposes theme combining Arthurian age, links it with a princely legacy and poses in front of the scintillating greens of the race course in a perfect setting embracing the surroundings with dominance and timelessness. “It brings forth a story of timelessness, distinguished lifestyles, magnificent views, ambient lighting, latest technology, modern architecture, opulent designs, large living spaces and resplendent quality to add magic in the lives of home buyers.”

The design brief

While designing the show flat, especially the children bathroom, the brief was very clear; the designing shall progress in a direction to achieve the ideal layout of the bathroom so that the same is spacious as well as user oriented.

On how they achieved the same, Nahar adds, “It all came down to attention to details. For example, designing of plumbing and drainage services was done as per the final layout for the proper functioning of bathrooms. We also made optimum use of block walls at two sides which are common to plumbing shaft for routing the service lines and construction of ledge wall where we have structural members to accommodate the concealed cistern tank.”

The layout

As you enter into children bathroom you have rectangular countertop washbasin on Caravaggio marble slab counter adequately lit with indirect light from bottom of mirror cladded storage unit above the counter which was included to provide uncluttered counter spaces. As you pass by the basin, you will enter in to the bathtub having rain shower, other bathroom faucets and mirror TV for relaxing and refreshing moments. The closet is placed at ideal position at one side of the room so that the spacing and flow of the room is maintained for its comfortable use.

Nahar further informs, “In this bathroom, we always wanted to create a sense of space which is a perfect zone to unwind and de-stress. So, we have meticulously planned it by combining high-end materials, finishes and good lighting to create a bathroom that is calm, cosy and indulgent.”

Clean look and sense of space has its own appeal. “We have created more provision for adequate storage which is an essential part of the bathroom which gives a neat and clutter-free look to the bathroom by storing all the towels and toiletries within built-in storage cabinets,” adds Nahar.

Materials, colour palette and more

Talking about the high-end materials used in the washrooms, Nahar adds, “For children bathroom, the exclusive marble slab book match pattern on wall bang opposite to the entry door is immediately noticeable as you open the door of the bathroom. Master bathroom is having black glass mosaic tile dado with inlay of golden glass mosaic tile which is modern art deco Style.” The other thing that catches the eye is the twin washbasin counter in winter grey marble with mirror TV which can be watched from bathtub area.

The designer has preferred built-in bathtub for this project over the freestanding ones. “Bathtubs are a fantastic addition to any bathroom, giving you the ability to relax, unwind, massage sore muscles, and bathe young children. Choosing a tub can feel like a challenge, especially when you see the sheer quantity and variety of options on offer,” opines Nahar further adding that built-in tub is more flexible than freestanding tubs as it’s easier to clean and easy to include a shower. “It also has more storage options compared to freestanding tubs. Even though compared to freestanding tubs built-in tub installation takes longer and costs more, it’s easy to maintain and has more design options,” reasons Nahar.

Detailing about the colour palette used in the washrooms, Nahar adds, “It’s not about colour scheme, but about the feeling: What emotions does this colour evoke within? We opted for a timeless and minimalist neutral colour as the idea is to have a calming nurturing environment because this is what we need right now. Individuals are more interested in discovering a personal colour world rather than following colour trends that won’t speak to them.”

Design and colour are tools to express who we are and what we stand for. “Design is becoming increasingly personal and moving away from simply copying fixed design themes. The bathroom at home is often overlooked, but we have changed the perspective. Now, we have translated the design philosophy to discover how the bathroom is an important component of our home aesthetic. As the bathroom is an extension of our interior world, we have applied similar colour, materials and even furniture. There are no conceptual design boundaries anymore in this project – the design transition connects all,” shares Nahar.
