Public Toilet In Shipping Container
One of the ingredients needed for a clean city is clean toilets. This is more valid for Kochi which is a tourist destination. The toilets also have to be of high finish since they are to be maintained well.
“Public toilet in old shipping containers is one project we did for BKRG to be placed in various parts of the city of Kochi. So far, two toilets were installed and another 5 are waiting to be installed,” shares S Gopakumar.
He further adds, “Used containers are available at lessor cost and lightweight thus saving on the foundation. The toilets are made in a factory and moved to the site for final service connections. Aluminium panels (ACP) are used for interior walls so that there are no tile joints and allow easy maintenance.”
There are no windows but the lighting and ventilation are handled by two chimney towers with glass top and exhaust on their sides. Glass brings enough light and keeps the place bright and dry by mere sunlight. The heat generated by sunlight also attracts the upward flow of air which is exhausted by the fans. This method keeps the toilet hygienic and clean. All the urinals have an auto flush and hot air hand drying also is provided.
The front elevation has vertical gardens on both sides and an advertisement space at the centre which help to finance maintenance. The container toilets can be produced fast and relocated if necessary.
